ドナルド・トランプ大統領は、自らをタリフマンと呼び、タリフ（関税）を世界一美しい言葉だとしている。そしてほとんど全ての国際摩擦をタリフの行使によって解決しようとする。デンマーク領グリーンランドをUSAが領有するのが望ましいと言い、もしデンマークが抵抗するならタリフを掛けると脅す。トランプがタリフに掛ける「バカの一つ覚え」は顕著だ。
だがタリフはそれほど万能なのだろうか？タリフを掛けるということは、輸入品の価格が吊り上がり、USA国内の物価は上昇する。トランプは狂乱物価を解決することを公約の一つとして再選した。タリフを掛けまくるのは物価を押し上げ、矛盾した結果をもたらすのではないか？
またUSA国内の産業を保護する目的もあるが、USAはかなり長い間、物作りを軽視してきた。アップルコンピュータはＵＳＡ国内でアセンブリしないし、最近話題になったＵＳスティールも、中国や日本のようには技術革新に励まなかったので工場閉鎖の憂き目に遭っている。日本の作家：司馬遼太郎は「こんなに金融にうつつを抜かす国（ＵＳＡ）は長続きしない。」と書いている。USAの空洞化した国内産業は、タリフくらいでは立ち直るまい。
PS トランプの大統領就任２か月、USA国内は物価が上がりつつあり、株価も下落している。トランプは、「この状況は過渡的なもの、いずれバラ色になる」と嘯いている。でも、トランプ元側近によると、トランプは「関税をよく理解していない」そうだ。関税を掛ければ、掛けられた相手は報復関税を掛ける。ＥＵがバーボンウイスキーに関税を掛けると聞いたトランプ、（この事態は予想していなかったのか）激怒して「ＥＵのワイン、シャンパンに２００％の関税を掛ける」と発言した。これは茶番だな。まあ、USAが自滅するだろう。

President Donald Trump calls himself a tariff man and considers tariff the most beautiful word in the world. He tries to resolve almost all international frictions by using tariffs. He says it would be good for the USA to take possession of Greenland, a part of Denmark, and threatens to impose tariffs if Denmark resists. Trump's "one-trick pony" when it comes to tariffs is obvious.
But are tariffs really that versatile? Imposing tariffs means that the prices of imported goods go up, and prices in the USA rise. Trump was re-elected with one of his campaign promises being to solve the inflation problem. Won't imposing tariffs too much push up prices and bring about contradictory results?
It also seems that there is a purpose to protect domestic industries in the USA, but the USA has been neglecting manufacturing for quite a long time. Apple Computer does not assemble its products in the USA, and US Steel, which has been in the news recently, has been forced to close its factories because it did not innovate like China and Japan. Japanese author Ryotaro Shiba wrote, "A country (USA) that is so obsessed with finance will not last long." The hollowed-out domestic industry of the USA will not recover with tariffs.
PS: Two months after Trump took office as president, prices in the USA have been rising, and stock prices have been falling. Trump boasts that "this situation is temporary and will soon be rosy." However, a former Trump aide states that Trump "doesn't understand tariffs." If tariffs are imposed, the other party will impose retaliatory tariffs. When Trump heard that the EU would impose tariffs on bourbon whiskey, he was furious (perhaps he hadn't expected this to happen), and said, "We will impose a 200% tariff on EU wine and champagne." This is a farce. Well, the USA will destroy itself.
