クラシック関係の本で読んだことだが、メンデルスゾーンはモーツァルトに劣り、ブルックナーはバッハに劣り、ブラームスはベートーヴェンに劣るという。これはクラシック関係者の間では暗黙の了解だそうだが、この不等式については、最後の一つに異議がある。
ベートーヴェンはブラームスに劣る。これは私が自分の耳で確かめたことなので間違いない。ベートーヴェンの交響曲９番「喜びの歌」はこの上なく汚らしい曲だし、比較的まともな3番「田園」すら、稚拙な感性が横溢している駄曲だ。どうでもよいことに苦しみ、喜び、矮小な世界で一人相撲を取っている曲が、ベートーヴェンの音の全てである。
ブラームスはベートーヴェンに私淑しており、交響曲を書くにあたって相当苦しんだそうだが、出来た交響曲１番は清澄、おおらかである。ブラームスは健康人と言って良いだろう。彼に比べるとベートーヴェンは病人であり、濁り切っている。ゲーテはベートーヴェンの曲を「大袈裟すぎる」と評し、日本の詩人・劇作家の寺山修二は「気の小さな町工場の社長の音楽」と評した。私も彼らに同意する。私はベートーヴェンが過大評価されてきたと見る。実際、詰まらない音だ。

I read in a classical music book that Mendelssohn is inferior to Mozart, Bruckner to Bach, and Brahms to Beethoven. This is an unspoken understanding among classical music professionals, but I disagree with the last of these inequalities.
Beethoven is inferior to Brahms. I have confirmed this with my ears, so I can be sure. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, "Ode to Joy," is an extremely dirty piece of music, and even the relatively decent Symphony No. 3, "Pastoral," is a piece of junk filled with immature sensibility. Beethoven's music is all about suffering and rejoicing over insignificant things and wrestling alone in a small world.
Brahms admired Beethoven and struggled a lot when writing his symphonies, but the Symphony No. 1 he completed is clear and generous. Brahms can be said to be a healthy man. Compared to him, Beethoven was sick and completely muddy. Goethe described Beethoven's music as "too exaggerated," and Japanese poet and playwright Shuji Terayama described it as "the music of a small-minded, local factory owner." I agree with them. I think Beethoven has been overrated. His sound is boring.
